- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon peppermint extract
- 1/2 cup crushed candy canes
- Red food coloring
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a bowl, mix flour, baking powder, and salt.
- In another bowl, beat butter and sugar until fluffy.
- Add the egg, vanilla, and peppermint extract to the butter mixture, and mix well.
- Gradually add the flour mixture and mix until combined.
- Divide the dough in half. Color one half with red food coloring.
- Take small pieces of each color and roll them into ropes.
- Twist the red and white ropes together and shape them into candy canes.
- Place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Bake for 9-11 minutes until set.
- Let cool, then sprinkle with crushed candy canes.
Notes
- Store cookies in an airtight container.
- For a stronger peppermint flavor, increase peppermint extract.
- Cookies can be decorated with additional icing if desired.
